Our Story
In 2009, Treger had recently moved to Detroit and met a friend while volunteering at a local nonprofit. When she discovered her friend was homeless, she began collecting furniture from her own house and asking others to donate. Treger and her friend Ana loaded everything into Ana's pickup truck, and Humble's first client was served. The furniture kept coming, and Treger—having discovered a gap in support for people leaving shelters—founded Humble Design. Now serving four cities across four states, Humble Design continues to welcome people home, so that lives are changed for good.
Born out of Empathy
Treger didn't set out to create a national nonprofit or fill a gap in the continuum of care for people experiencing homelessness. She didn't plan on establishing a system that would help thousands of veterans, women, children, and families, or help stop the revolving door of homelessness. She just wanted to help a friend in need.
In 2009, a chance encounter changed her life and the lives of thousands of others—forever. Treger's founding vision lives on.
